A BIRDHOUSE THAT'S GONE TO POT
Most gardeners have lots of plastic pots accumulating in a corner somewhere. These pots can be given new lives as birdhouses.
You need two pots the same size, a wine cork, a ¼ inch dowel, a hanger, glue, plastic tape, a metal pipe and a drill. The first step is to create an entrance. To do this, heat the pipe and melt a hole in the bottom of one pot large enough for the birds to fit through. For a perch, drill a hole into which a small length of dowel will fit tightly. Insert the dowel into the hole until the end sticks out about 20mm on the inside of the pot.
Next drill a hole lengthwise through the cork to fit the dowel tightly. Cut two 10mm slices from the cork and apply glue on one side of each slice. Slide the pieces, glued sides facing each other, down both of the dowel ends until one piece of cork is glued to the inside and one to the outside of the pot. Next, place the open ends of the two pots together and join with plastic tape. Finally cut a wire hanger to the appropriate length, bend the ends, and insert them into the drainage holes at the bottom of each pot. Hang your birdhouse where you can easily watch the birds in the spring.
