FRUIT GARDEN

  • Spray stone fruits to combat leaf curl and brown rot as soon as petals fall. When apple and pear buds show flower clusters spray to combat codlin moth and fungus diseases.
  • Grafting of Apples and Pears should be done towards the end of the month or early October dependant on seasonal conditions.

JOBS

  • Plant more Gladioli and keep beds free from weeds. Divide and replant when flowering is finished of plants such as Primroses, Polyanthus, and Violets.
  • Gerberas should have all the foliage cut off, and where desired lifted and replanted. In replanting shorten back the rope-like roots and take care to keep crown of plants just above the surface of the soil, otherwise moisture may lodge and cause rot to set in.
  • Apply liquid manure to Cinerarias beginning to flower. Watch out for caterpillars.
  • Sow Delphiniums this month for planting out in Autumn.
  • Keep all spent flowers picked off Poppies, Pansies etc to prolong the flowering period. Winter flowering shrubs can now be cut back.
