![]() The A-Z Propagation Handbookfor New Zealand - by Geoff BryantReviewed by Olwen | |
![]() The blurb on the back cover says "Everyone can grow plants for free and this informative handbook shows you how." That statement should have every keen Garden Swapper interested immediately. A-Z Propagation lives up to that claim. It begins with a brief discussion of what propagation is and discusses how to decide what method to use. This is followed up with a description of the tools needed and how to control problems. This section is followed by a table showing propagation techniques by genus for over 1000 genera. A discussion of each of the main methods of propagation (Seed, Division, and Cuttings) follows with a description of special techniques involved in each. Each of these sections includes a table giving techniques and information on what to expect. Discussion on less common methods of propagation follows. This has layering, grafting, budding, and root cuttings techniques described in enough detail for most people to attempt them. The final section of the book is a short description of propagation techniques for popular garden perennials. This book will appeal to keen propagators at all levels. Those new to propagating plants will find enough information here to enable them to make proceed with confidence. Experienced and even professional gardeners will find this useful as a quick reference guide. Don't expect a showy book - the only colour pictures are on the cover. It won't help you select plants for your climate or locale. Nor will it tell you how to care for your plants once you have them. But at around $25 it is superb value for anyone who has ever considered multiplying their plants. This book is arguably the best buy I have made for my garden.
