FLOWER GARDENChrysanthemums can be planted out, put in a stake to each plant as you are planting them. Dahlia tubers should be started now through to December for autumn display. Tuberous begonias and Gloxinias will now be showing signs of growth and an be potted up. Sow annuals wherever room can be found in borders, more varieties of flowers seeds can be sown in the open this month than at any other time of the year.Continue the planting of Gladioli, replanting of Violets replanting only strong young runners, the removal of any leaves showing signs of rust in Carnations. Complete the pruning of winter flowering shrubs. |
VEGETABLESNow that the warm weather is with us again main sowings of all the more tender vegetables such as Cucumber, Pumpkin, Melons etc may be made outside. Also the more delicate Wax Beans. Complete the planting of Potatoes, spray with Cuprex to protect against blight. Plant out Tomatoes, Cabbage, Lettuce, Peas , Sweet Corn, Cauliflower, Cape Gooseberry, and Kumara plants. Keep greens well dusted with Derris dust or similar to keep aphis and white butterfly at bay. Side laterals of Tomatoes should be pinched out at the main stems. |
